The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas, and was doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Origins

You would expect a group with a name like Asia to be a prog rock band, but it is actually a fairly straight forward rock outfit. The group started out as a quartet, and they released two albums - 1979's self-titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background, but their biggest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, but not without issues. Record companies put the band on spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that's a smash or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on to give it. Toto was able to achieve this through the aid of the hit song "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience. Before joining the group, members worked as session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic trademark has become the standard of the '80s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.
The album begins hard with songs like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write fantastic AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. This song blends folk and distorted AOR, which should sound completely wrong but actually works extremely well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band went through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked Toto's final lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a traditional sextet style and a more consistent, stronger effort with a harder edge. The more edgy sound of the album was a reflection of the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's improved proficiency on the drums, as well as a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloying than earlier efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the group went on an extensive world tour to promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was released as a double album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band without one single track titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and the vocalist Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which hampered his singing. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes along with the other original members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally reforming the band. This lineup, with the exception of Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
